A moment of compassion on the M17 Road in Ga-Rankuwa on July 28 ended with a joyful family reunion, thanks to a vigilant citizen and members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department’s Social Crime Prevention Unit.
It began when a driver in a white Volkswagen noticed an elderly woman who seemed unsure of where she was going. Rather than drive past, he offered her a lift. As they travelled, it became clear she was disoriented. Concerned for her safety, he kept her with him and looked for help.
Spotting TMPD officers on patrol, he stopped and handed her into their care. The officers acted immediately, taking the woman to George Mukhari Hospital for assessment. Hospital staff provided medical support and shared her address and next-of-kin details.
Using the information, TMPD contacted her son, confirmed his identity, and drove the woman directly to her home. She was coherent but clearly unsettled, and officers ensured she was safely handed over to her relieved son.
TMPD has commended both the officers and the driver for their empathy and civic responsibility. The driver stayed to give a statement and refused to simply walk away.
In a time when indifference often makes headlines, this quiet act of care reminds us what community looks like: noticing someone in need, and going the extra mile to bring them home.
