Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in collaboration with Assupol donated winter items for patients in Spinal Unit in celebrating International Mandela Day.

The hospital was influenced by this year’s theme “Do What You Can With What You Have And Where You Are.”

Ms Khethiwe Nyathi, a nurse said In honor of Mandela Day, the Human Nutrition Department and Assupol made the day special for patients.

“We engaged in a variety of events in the various departments such as at Ward 39 where nurses and cleaners honored the day by high dusting and cleaning the walls and patient lockers.

“The MOPD staff demonstrated their compassion by providing patients socks, caps, and fruits as part of our hospital’s ongoing attitude of giving. The hospital continued the good deed by donating sanitary napkins to Ayanda Primary School on Tuesday morning,” she said.

Ms Naledi Goss, from MOPD staff, said Mandela urged South Africans to spend 67 minutes performing deeds of kindness, helping others, and improving their communities and the hospital was following those principles.

Ms Donald Sćhut, a nurse, said everyone must contribute in whatever way to create a better South Africa.

“Individual actions like joining a community policing forum, working at a charity or a shelter, reporting crime, or refusing to accept a bribe are the first step in defending our democracy.

“We can’t rely on others to create the South Africa we envision, the future of this country is in our hands,” she said.
