The students at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) protested outside the university in Ga-Rankuwa on 08 November 2021 demanding that students should continue to reside at the campus facilities after their contract with the University expires at the end of 2021.
Mr Phaladi Seakgwe, the communication manager at SMU, said the university received a set of demands from the students who are residents at The Heights, TVL, and Drie Lillies.
“The university stands firm on its decision that no student will be living in residences past the expiry of the signed agreement. The constant protests at the university have affected the academic year of 2021 and have negatively affected the operations of the university as the staff members are not able to access their offices,” he said.
He said the students want the management to withdraw its decision that has been passed by Council and that is not going to be possible.
He also said students should be aware that according to the university rules students are not allowed to block the university entrances or prevent students who want to proceed with academic studies or prevent staff members wishing to access their offices.
