Officers from the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Drug Unit have arrested two Ugandan nationals linked to an alleged cross-border motorcycle theft and smuggling syndicate operating across Gauteng on August 22.
The breakthrough came during a routine patrol in Centurion when officers spotted a suspicious vehicle near the N1 and Botha Avenue intersection. A stop-and-search of the black Toyota Voxy revealed two male occupants who could not explain the presence of several motorcycles and engines inside the vehicle.
Further checks confirmed the items as stolen. Recovered property included a Honda motorcycle, a Yamaha motorcycle, and two Triumph motorcycle engines, with a total estimated value of R880 000. The motorcycles had previously been reported stolen from Kempton Park, Alberton and Lyttelton.
Investigators believe the suspects form part of a wider network that steals motorcycles in South Africa and smuggles them into neighbouring countries. Similar cases have been reported across Gauteng in recent months.
The two men were immediately arrested and face charges of possession of three stolen motorcycles, possession of two stolen motorcycle engines, fraud, and possession of stolen property. They remain in custody pending a court appearance.
TMPD spokespersons praised the Drug Unit members for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the operation as an important step in disrupting organized vehicle crime in the province.
The department has urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity involving motorcycles or related parts to the nearest police station.
